One of the most important fundamental photography tips and techniques is to learn about composition. Whether you have a ten thousand dollar Digital SLR or a simple point and shoot camera, learning fundamental photography tips and techniques will improve your photos.
Many beginners that want to take amazing photos think that buying more lenses, expensive cameras, and other accessories will do the trick. By skipping out on basic photography tips and techniques, they end up taking photos that look like a student from high school photography 101.
Composition – The Heart of Visual Arts
Basic composition techniques are the foundation to photography. What does it mean to compose?
To create, to arrange, to order, to write…
When you take a photo you are composing a shot. In general, the great compositions of photos all have similar things in common. These similarities have been turned into compositional techniques and I will be sharing two easy to use “composition rules” right now!
Simple Does It
One of the easiest photography tips and techniques to implement is to keep the photo simple.
A simple photo does a number of things. It makes the viewer understand the photo better. They don’t have to worry about what to look at. They are instantly drawn into the main subject and don’t have to worry about what they should be looking at.
Simple shots can be taken by isolating your subject. Instead of taking twenty donkeys in a picture, take twenty pictures of each donkey separately. You can also get closer to the subject and this will reduce complexity and clutter.
Use Patterns
Another compositional technique you can use is patterns. Patterns are everywhere and photographing them can make for great shots. You could take pictures of the patterns of seats at a movie theatre, the pattern of golfer holes, etc.
Use Lines to Lead the Viewer
Lines are everywhere. Some may be less obvious (like the lines and curves of a tree) but they still affect the way a viewer sees an image. Great photographers know about this and use lines to create captivating photos that draw viewers in.
Try this: Next time you take a photo, notice all the lines. Are they leading to the point of interest in your photo? Be sure they aren’t leading to something of no importance!

A lot of useful tips here for the beginner of photography. I even got some useful info and I’m a professional, have been for several years. One thing I might add is that the equipment you use really has a major effect on the quality of your photos. I used a rebel XT for a few years and realized my photos weren’t very high quality. They just didn’t “pop” no matter how much effort and heart I put into the composition. Then I spent 3,000 on some new equipment and, vwallah! My photos definitely pop now.
Yes, an expensive camera with high quality lenses will definitely make your photos “pop” if you know how to use the equipment right. Of course, if you understand the fundamentals and “Art” of photography you can take quality pictures with most entry level SLR cameras.
